Lancashire’s Red Rose Recycling Awards Winners
SOME of Lancashire’s top recyclers have been congratulated for the hard work they have done to make the Red Rose County a little greener.
Four groups from across Lancashire won cash prizes at this year’s Lancashire Community Recycling Network’s (CRN) Red Rose Recycling Awards, held at a special “networking barbeque” at Off Shoots, Townley Hall in Burnley.
Those attending also heard that green groups from across the county could be in line for hundreds of pounds to help them deliver even more new local projects with two new funding streams - ‘Community Solutions’ and ‘Waste Action Grants’, - which have been launched with the financial backing of Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council and are administered by Global Renewables.
The winners of this year’s Red Rose Recycling Awards are:
Best Community Enterprise £1,000 - West Lancs Community Recycling Service
For its furniture and domestic goods collection project which assists the reduction of landfill and instances of fly tipping. An important aspect of the project is being able to offer volunteer work placements to people actively looking for employment by engaging them in refurbishment and repair work on recovered material.

Best New Project £1,000 - Fylde Community Link
For its not-for-profit initiative which has been set up to help adults with learning disabilities to understand the importance of recycling and give them the skills and qualifications in this field.

Best Voluntary Organisation £1,000 - St Catherine’s Hospice
The organisation identified barriers for people wishing to make donations, including parking restrictions and pedestrianised areas, so set up a 5 days/week donation and recycling point providing trouble-free drop offs.

Red Rose Recycling Champion £250 - Rachael Lowe, University of Lancaster Sports Centre
For introducing the idea of giving members reusable bottles that can be refilled at water stations, saving a total of 50,000 plastic cups per year.

After thank you speeches were made, delegates were left to enjoy the BBQ, network with fellow community recyclers and sign up to join the Lancashire CRN.
Said Andrew Swarbrick, Chair of the Lancashire CRN, “It was a great opportunity for organisations, groups and individuals across Lancashire to meet up and share best practice. The winners at this year’s awards showcased a variety of schemes and projects that are invaluable to the sustainability of this County”.

The Lancashire CRN group has also recently launched a new look website to improve and strengthen its position in the community sector and help continue to deliver environmental, social and economic benefits across Lancashire. Visitors to the site can find out more about the new funding opportunities and how the Lancashire CRN can help them.
The Lancashire CRN is a not-for-profit, member organisation providing information, networking, and recognition and communication opportunities - and promotes project funding and support to sustainable waste management initiatives in Lancashire.
